Essential Opera works and creates primarily in Mi’kma’ki, on the unceded, occupied lands of the Mi’kmaq people. This area is governed by the pre-colonial Peace and Friendship treaty, first signed between the Mi’kma’ki, Wolastoqey, and Peskotomuhkati Peoples and the British crown in the 1700s. As treaty people we are all responsible for the well-being of the land and all the creatures with whom we share it. Essential Opera recognizes that this ongoing work goes beyond a land acknowledgement.
